About us
Our Wirral Children’s Learning Disability (LD) Service is a community based, specialist service offering support to children, young people and their families/carers across Wirral. Our aim is to provide a service that works in partnership with families/carers, is person and family centred and focused on the needs of the child/young person, offers support based on the goals identified by the family, adopts a multi-agency approach and has a flexible way of working.
The team consists of:
- Learning disability nurses
- Clinical psychologists
- Assistant practitioner
- Assistant psychologist
- Consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist
- Team manager
- Team administrator
We work with:
- Children with learning disabilities and their family/carers
- Teachers/nursery practitioners
- Social care practitioners
- Health professionals
- Voluntary and charity based agencies
What we offer
We offer the following services:
- Challenging Behaviour Workshops
- 1:1 work with families based on individual needs
- A Positive Behaviour Support approach and PBS plans
- Behavioural, health and well-being assessments
- Behavioural advice and interventions
- Advice, support and training to families/carers and professionals
- Telephone consultations and signposting
- Early Bird Programme - for parents whose children have been recently diagnosed with an Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC) under the age of 5
- Sleep assessments

How to access us
Young people that meet the below criteria can be referred to us by a professional (such as a GP or teacher):
- Children and young people aged 0-16 with a severe learning disability, global developmental delay, profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) who's difficulties are expressed behaviourally
- Children and young people aged 0-16 with a moderate learning disability and mental health problems with additional complexity that impacts significantly on cognitive functioning
