What is Learning Disability Week (LD Week)?
Learning Disability Week is a week-long campaign that takes place every year in June. It is organised by Mencap. This year it takes place 15 – 21 June 2026. The theme for 2026 is "Do you see me?" which is all about people with a learning disability being seen, heard and valued.
In Cheshire and Wirral Partnership (CWP) Children and Young People’s Mental Health Services (CYPMHS), our Learning Disability (LD) teams get involved by spreading awareness across our online platforms and sharing useful information in our waiting rooms.
What is Learning Disability Children and Young People’s Mental Health Service?
Our Learning Disabilities Service works with young people up to the age of 18 who have a diagnosis of a severe or a profound learning disability (sometimes described as PMLD) and behavioural difficulties.
Our aim is to try and understand the reasons for the child/young person’s behaviours and then develop strategies and ideas to help using a multi-agency approach (different organisations and professionals working together), we offer a flexible, person-centred way of working which may include:
- Goal-based interventions
- Utilising a Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) model
In Cheshire we offer adapted Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) models to address low mood and anxiety disorders when appropriate.
We offer parenting courses such as:
at their 2026 LD Week Fundraiser for Mencap
- Signposts for Building Better Behaviour
- Preventative Parenting Strategies – Understanding, Preventing and Managing Behaviour Difficulties
- Feelings Detectives
- Riding the Rapids
- Behavioural sleep assessments and interventions
Additional support:
- Advice sessions
- Consultations with professionals and other services
What doesn't the service offer?
This service does not offer diagnosis of learning disabilities.
This service does not offer diagnosis of ADHD.
Children and young people with a mild or moderate learning disability who also have a severe and enduring mental health difficulty can be seen in the 0–18 service, with reasonable adjustments made to support their needs.
